Description

In the municipality of Arzúa, A Coruña. And more specifically, in a place with a name so evocative as San Martiño de Calvos de Sobrecamiño, is this superb construction. Arzúa is one of the last stages of the Camino de Santiago Francés. This town is also known for its cow cheeses with the designation of origin Arzúa Ulloa, one of the most representative of Galicia.

The big house

Large house, similar to a Pazo (the Galician rural palace), built in 1611, even has its coat of arms on the facade. The property consists of the large main stone house with two floors. Its surface is 315 m2 per plant. Therefore, the total area is 630 m2 lower covered with about 250 m2: 880 m2 in total. To this building, we must add four other smaller buildings that could be transformed into apartments. They are located within the same enclosure. Firewood is currently in one of them. Another is an old lareira kitchen, (the typical Galician country house cuisine). In addition, another building stores farm implements. And the last exterior building is an old huge barn of 3.5 X15 m.

The house has many possibilities. New floors of wood and ceramic tile. Exposed wooden beams. A combination of whitewashed walls and stone walls. And large stone fireplaces in several rooms.

The farm

It has a stone dovecote inside the enclosure. A stone wall surrounds the entire perimeter of the property. The surface of the land is 8,766 m² inside the walls. And another 8.565 m² with American oaks planted by the outside of the wall. Which makes a total land area of 17,331 m2. It is said that in the period of the Carlist Wars (1833-1876) it was a barracks. And that, years before, during the Napoleonic Wars (1802-1814), when the English armies of the Duke of Wellington came to the area of Arzúa, valuable documents of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela were hidden in this house.

This is an exceptional property full of possibilities. It is not difficult to imagine it converted into a beautiful rural hotel, a hostel of the highest level for pilgrims or any type of leisure or hospitality establishment.
