In Figueras, within the municipality of Castropol, Asturias, we found this property. Castropol lies on the banks of the Ría de Ribadeo, the estuary where the Eo river flows into the Bay of Biscay and a part of the biosphere reserve. This river is the natural border between Galicia and Asturias. It is a land of large houses built by emigrants to America. They are the famous “houses of Indianos” that mark, mainly, the Cantabrian coast.
A 19th century stone house, very well preserved
It consists of three floors plus attic, fully rehabilitated and ready to live in. In fact, it is occupied every summer for fortnights. The thick stone walls and the slate roof, as well as the windows, although the house dates from about 1840, are in perfect condition. They have been constantly maintained so that they keep their colonial style intact and preserve it free of damp. Its extension is 937 m2 built, plus two external buildings: a warehouse that includes a boiler room and laundry/iron; as well as a beautiful game room. They have 60 m2 each. Also, inside the garden, a Galician granary (horreo) and a two-story dollhouse, with approximately 50 m2, are included. The house has central heating and hot water with a gas oil boiler and water tank. All the qualities of the house correspond to a building of this category: wood and stone slabs in beams and floors according to the zones. The water comes from the village system, and also has public sanitation and septic tank. There is a covered well inside the property. Therefore, altogether the constructed area exceeds the 1,000 m2 extensively if we include the mentioned external buildings. The house is sold furnished, except for personal items.
On the ground floor, there is a large lobby with an exit to the back of the house. On the sides, a dining room and a living room with a fireplace and gallery. In the back, the kitchen, with office, cellar / pantry and two toilets plus a broom cupboard. There is also a service double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. The wooden staircase takes us to the first floor. There we find two areas on both sides of a large central distributor. The main area of the apartment, which is composed of a spacious living room, the master bedroom with dressing room and ensuite bathroom. And on the other side, surrounding a beautiful living room, four bedrooms. Two of them have ensuite bathroom and, for the other two, there is a common bathroom with a double sink and two individual entrances. Following the stairs, we go up to the second floor. There are three other bedrooms with an ensuite bathroom. Also two huge storage rooms, on both sides of this floor, which has a total area of 210 m2. Finally, on the attic, there is a storeroom loft of about 70 m2.
A beautiful plot of land in Castropol
If we add the prairie plot, with direct access from the road, and the wooded and closed garden with a stone wall, it is a total area of 11,000 m2. In it, we find, apart from the fresh green meadows, a series of large shade trees and the typical palm trees of these colonial houses that the initial owners planted as a souvenir of the lands where they made their fortune.
Castropol: the Galician or Asturian coast, to choose
The area of Figueras, where this unique building is located, is very special. Oviedo and its airport 60 minutes away. The Galician coast of Lugo, with the beach of Las Catedrales 12 km away and Foz or the wonderful Ría de Viveiro just beyond. Or the Asturian, starting with the beautiful and natural Peñarronda Beach, 2 minutes by car, and continuing along the coast: to Frejulfe beach, the brown beach of Navia, Artedo, Barayo, Cadavedo, Porcía … all good beaches for bathing and surfing. There is where to choose. And the Camino de Santiago del Norte a stone’s throw away.
As a result, all these attractions and the situation of this magnificent house offer an exceptional opportunity as a prime tourist enclave to establish a successful business.
