The history of the old school of Ladra
The building was built in 1925 by the paternal grandfather of the current owner. His goal was to give classes, altruistically, to the village children who lacked a school. Imagine … In that decade of 1920, a teacher, in a private capacity, and a parish priest started giving classes to the children for many years. Until, at the end of the 1930s, it became a public school and a national teacher was installed. At that time, the Town Hall of Villalba paid two pesetas a year to help with the maintenance of the school. Formerly, the teacher lived on the top floor. And, on the ground floor, there was a place to have some animals and save his horse, or his motorcycle years later. On the top floor, now diaphanous, there were three bedrooms and a kitchen. Children used to work in the teacher’s orchard …
On the ground floor was the school. The world map still remains under the plaster. It worked as a house-school until the late 1970s, when they took the school to Vilalba. In this school children and adults were taught and some of these children today are university professors.
The schoolhouse has 100 m2 per floor. It has a new slate roof. The outdoor fireplace is new. Walls are made of stone. It has two new plates under the roof above and forming the floor of the upper floor below. The structure around the roof area has been reinforced so that the wooden beams of chestnut and oak, in perfect condition, cease to be structural and are merely decorative, if they are to be preserved. That is, if you want to gain height on the upper floor, you can remove those wooden beams.
It has a septic tank, has electricity and has a well that is currently in disuse, which would have to be rehabilitated. The house is ready to initiate a rehabilitation that turns it into a magnificent house, with all the possibilities … A diaphanous space that can be used as a modern loft or compartmentalize it to the taste that is wanted.
It is built on a plot of 1,700 m2. It had a patio in front and a patio behind for boys and girls separately … The boys’ playground today is crossed by the road. Close to the school, there is a mill, a recreational area, the trouty Ladra River and many things to see and enjoy.
Ladra setting-up location
This point has very good communication to go to Coruña and by the Autovía del Cantábrico reach the coast of Lugo, in just over 30 minutes. Its environment is agricultural and livestock but there are no farms next to this house-school. Very close to the property, there is the Denomination of Origin of San Simón de Villalba Cheese. Nearby is also the area where the famous capones de Vilalba roosters are raised, also protected by their Geographical Origin Denomination.
The memory of that time and the lives of those children who opened their eyes to the world and knowledge in this building is still alive among its walls and trees.
